Wallets Begging For Mercy

By Madalyn Milner

“I saw some new electric garden trimmers. They’re cutting hedge technology,” your dad says as you’re both at Lowe’s.

Let’s be real, your dad isn’t cool. As you both go back to the car, he’s laughing and yelling, “What a knee slapper!”

Everybody goes out shopping at some point in their life, whether that be after church, before a birthday party, or during just any circumstance in general.

Black Friday can be a time where some people struggle to get the item they want. It used to be a big thing years ago, and some students still participate in it. Freshman Emma Lyons had a troublesome time at Best Buy in late 2024.

“One time, we went and tried to get a TV at Best Buy,” Lyons said. “We were like really early, and we had this lady literally scream at us. It was the last TV, and we said we were there first. The old lady was like, ‘I need this more than you, and I was like, ‘No it’s not yours, it’s MINE!’”

It’s not just Lyons with a memorable Black Friday experience. Freshman Trinity Sewell had one as well.

“I was at Walmart, I’m obviously tall, but this one mom with her dwarf-sized kids decided to talk to me. The mom said I’m very tall and all I wanted to do was tell her kids they’re mini-sized,” Sewell said.

On some occasions people just go to the store for a quick item. A grab-and-go. Senior Lindsey Lynch is one of those people.

We went to Target, and it’s a long story, but I got bleach on my pants because I was cleaning my bathroom, and I didn’t realize until I was on my way to practice,” Lynch said. “So then, I got Kylee (Robles) to come with me, and we were like let’s just run into Target and see what we can find. So, we bought a toothbrush and baking soda. We were too far away from my house, and I was like my mom’s gonna be mad. The baking soda and the toothbrush worked, though.”

The sad thing is that we’re in the 21st century, and there’s little kids using Retinol. Retinol is a skincare serum, and it’s commonly used for acne and anti-aging.

Basically retinol serums help out with eye wrinkles and such, or they’re supposed to anyway. These spoiled monsters, I mean little girls, run wild in Ulta and Sephora.

Skincare has become a massive industry for beauty. Some popular skincare brands include Glow Recipe, Drunk Elephant and CeraVe.

Once again, Lyons ran into one of these little heathens at Sephora. At Sephora and Ulta, there’s a Drunk Elephant endcap and you can make “skincare smoothies.”

Skincare smoothies are notorious for being made out of Drunk Elephant products. Basically, you mix their bronzing drops with one of their peptide lotions, and BOOM SHAKALAKA, you now have yourself a skincare smoothie.

“I ran into Sephora and ran into the Drunk Elephant section stuff EVERYWHERE, and it was almost moldy,” Lyons said. “I heard this one girl who was like 9 and she said ‘Mommy, go buy this,’ and it was so funny.”

To put these kids into more context, they are brutally spoiled by their parents. Senior Chloe Newsome encountered one of these kids one time.

“There was a little girl in Lululemon,” Newsome said.

Lululemon is one of those clothing brands where you, of course, have to drop money on it!

People obviously choose to spend their money in different ways, including methods of budgeting.

Budgeting is a simple, but effective way to make sure you save your money, yet still get what you want, right? It couldn’t go wrong!

Wrong. For some people, including me, shopping is addictive. It doesn’t matter how much money you have, you’ll still spend it all on one single shopping trip.

Lynch went over her budget one time. Her typical limit when she goes out is 50 bucks. Her dad puts a bit of money in her bank account.

“He doesn’t like it when I get really expensive things, but you gotta do what you gotta do,” she said.

She went out to shop to get some shaving supplies. Truly Beauty is a great shaving brand, but pricey. Totally worth it, though.

Lynch saw there was a three-product set she wanted, but also she saw a buy three products, get one free deal. So, she bought a bunch of their  birthday cake scent, and a Laneige lip mask.

She went to the cash register and realized she had spent over $190.

“I used my card and got a bad call from my dad that day,” she said.
