Special needs students aren’t as different as some of us might think. They might think differently but they are like other students.
Mr. Tyler Harris and Mr. Shane Conley are special education teachers here at Delta high school and they both stated that when you go and talk to special needs students, treat them the same as you would with any other student.
“I think that for the most part many of the students in my class or Mr. Harris’s class you would approach like you would with any high school student and say hello and carry on a conversation,” Conley said.
“We just treat them like normal kids in our area and that is the best way for other students to treat them too,” Harris said.
There is a way on how not to approach the students and that is treating them like they are an elementary student.
“Sometimes some kids will talk to them like they are little kids or treat them like an elementary student which I understand cause a lot of times they’re like academic level is like elementary level but for the most part kids are very social and social skills are very high so just talk to them like any other kid,” Harris said.
Chandler Ashley is a senior and is one of many students in special education, but he has an ability that stands out from everyone else. Ashley has the ability to remember historical events.
“[I have] great memories of certain historic events like September 11th, the January 6th insurrection, and the space shuttle Challenger tragedy, United States Presidents, and music whether it is from a different genre, ’50s, ’60s, ’70s and ’80s,” Ashley said.
Wyatt Bousman is a freshman who likes to play Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 and Fortnite. Bousman describes himself as a helpful person.
Breonna Fox is a senior and she describes herself as kindhearted and a hard worker. One thing that Fox likes about high school is that she gets to hang out with her friends.
Morgan Gaddis is a sophomore and likes to play outside, color, and likes to talk to her friends when she gets home from school. Gaddis describes herself as a nice person.
The special needs students like doing activities that we like doing like talking to friends and playing games. Next time you see a special needs student, go up and start a conversation with them and get to know them.
