Imagine being sick, but not knowing why. Maybe not being able to taste or smell? Having a bad cough? After getting tested for other illnesses and the tests coming back negative you realize you may have this fairly new illness, Covid-19.
Covid-19 has affected Delta in many different ways. Lots of people you know have been affected by Covid not only physically, but also mentally.
Freshman Emme Townsend experienced Covid in November 2020.
“When I first got Covid it put me in a really bad mental state because it was new at that point and everyone was making up symptoms for it,” Townsend said. “I didn’t know if I was not going to be able to taste or be hospitalized, or even just have a cough. In the end, I actually only lost my taste and my smell.”
People with Covid have different experiences. Freshman Savannah Condie also experienced having Covid.
“I skipped diving practice for like a month, so it affected that because I didn’t get much practice time,” Condie said.
Having Covid can keep people away from sports and school for different lengths of time. People who have experienced Covid may have completely different symptoms from others.
Junior Alex Navarro has experienced some different symptoms while having Covid.
“I had the symptom of puking blood,” Navarro said.
Covid can keep people away from their families, also.
“I remember I got it in November 2020 which meant I had to miss my family’s Thanksgiving,” Townsend said. “It was rough because we had Thanksgiving with just my mom and my siblings that year which was weird because we usually have a big get together with my cousins and my aunts and uncles so I missed out on that.”
Covid-19 may spread to others in a household.
Sophomore Caitlyn Kirby had Covid on Thanksgiving day 2021.
“My family had it mild compared to other people I’ve heard about. My dad had it the worst, and then I had it second worst,” Kirby said. “All of us had horrible migraines. My mom’s eyes and my eyes hurt really bad. A few of us were nauseous. It was really sad because my extended family doesn’t get together very often, and since it was Thanksgiving I was excited to see them, but it didn’t work out the way I wanted it to.”
Covid can be different from many other illnesses.
Freshman Owen Cupp has also experienced Covid.
“It’s different in the sense of how it’s transmittable and how people treat it. Since Covid-19 is spread via airborne particles and droplets, it is pretty contagious,” Cupp said. “Unlike viruses such as the flu, Covid symptoms can last anywhere from a week to even months after a person has been infected by it. Also unlike the flu, people must wear masks because of Covid-19 being transmittable through the air.”
Unfortunately people can even have such severe cases of Covid that it can result in awful endings.
Jerry West was a bus driver for Delaware Community Schools for 24 years. He passed away after a long battle with Covid on Dec. 26, 2021.
