Covid-19 had just made a huge impact all throughout America, and everyone was panicking. Schools were beginning to shut down and had to think of an educational alternative system, fast. This was when E-learning became a regular routine for the everyday student.
The past two school years E-learning has suddenly disappeared without much fanfare here at Delta.
I believe that Delta High School should participate in E-learning when we aren’t able to attend school due to poor weather or unexpected situations. E-learning is a great alternative education system that allows schools to not have to extend the school year with make-up days.
Unfortunately the Delaware Community Schools administration has made the conscious decision to no longer participate in E-learning.
Delta families were informed of this before the school year began in an email including information as to why Delta was going to stop E-learning.
“Put simply, it is not an effective instructional model for K-12 students,” DelCom superintendent Greg Kile said. “We believe that DelCom students deserve an excellent education and that we can best facilitate that in person.”
Along with this change in Delta’s routine, the Indiana Department of Education implemented a new rule in 2022. This new rule limited school corporations to a maximum of three E-learning days that can be used to replace missed days.
The purpose of this rule is to keep schools from excessively using E-learning.

In my opinion it would be very beneficial to take advantage of these three E-learning days and use them when needed.
With this rule in action teachers and administrators are able to be less lenient on assignments and due dates.
This is because it would be rare that we did have an E-learning day, so students would have no excuses for missing assignments.
Along with missing assignments many kids aren’t in attendance on make-up days because they have already made plans.
E-learning would be a quick solution to this problem, and most students would be capable of doing it remotely.
E-learning could also solve other problems such as make-up days.
On Feb. 13 Delta cancelled school due to unexpected weather conditions.
This has forced Delta to use our last built in snow day and make up school on April 21.
Unlike Delta, some schools operated on an E-Learning schedule on Feb. 13. Due to that they do not have to make up a school day but Delta will.
Delta is currently the only school out of eight in Delaware County that does not participate in E-Learning. Cowan Supt. Chris Conley, who was previously the Delta principal, said he plans to move away from E-Learning in the future but has used it some this school year.
The other schools have not yet had to make up for a missed school day because they use E-Learning.
I think many students would be more than happy to attend E-Learning again.
