Game Changers

Esports can be an overlooked club. Not a lot of students know about it, but the students in Esports have some fun stories.

Sophomore Daxton Edwards had a memorable moment that happened on a special day.

“One of my favorite gaming moments was when I won a Super Smash Bros tournament on my birthday,” he said. “It was pretty challenging because as you go up the ranks the more challenging it gets.”

There are 25 to 30 students that are in Esports. They play multiple types of games like Super Smash Bros, Valorant, Fortnite and other games.

Senior Ethan Chrich says that his all time favorite game is Elden Ring because he likes playing the developer’s games. Their all time favorite games that they play are Super Smash Bros or Valorant, according to Esports coach Mr. Kurt Griffis, who teaches construction and engineering.

The people in Esports play against each other and not other schools because it is hard to schedule due to Mr. Griffis also coaching unified track.

Mr. Griffis became the Esports coach because he was part of a tech club at the middle school and he also has a room with computers.

The Esports team meets up on different days of the week. They go until 4:45 after school. They like playing against each other because it is a way to have fun and to make and get closer with friends.

Senior Collin Haughn is an example of this.

“I made some new friends and It made me love gaming more,” Collin said.

The people who joined Esports are not just crazy gamers. Like Collin, they just like to have fun with friends.

The students in Esports play Super Smash Bros tournaments against each other.

There was a funny moment that happened last year when Esports held a Super Smash Bros tournament and Mr. Griffis actually won a match.

After he beat a kid in a game of Super Smash Bros, Mr. Griffis ran around the room yelling in celebration.

Esports can be a great club to join so that you can have fun.

“I joined Esports because it is my specialty and it is my strength that I am good at,” Daxton said.
