When sophomore Alivia Jackson streams The Circle, it’s not just that she’s interested in the plot or wants to see what happens next. She has a special interest because her uncle, JR Hillis, does the casting for the show.
“I’m not sure how he went about getting the job, but he’s been in the film industry for a while now,” Jackson said.
Her uncle, who lives in Los Angeles, hasn’t just worked on The CIrcle, but other shows and movies, too. These include Worst Cooks in America, The Glee Project, Buy it Now, and even one of the popular shows on the platform of Netflix, Squid Games.
Students spend much of their free time streaming various shows on Netflix and other streaming services.
According to a recent Google Forms survey sent to all students, the most popular show this season is Outer Banks, and the most anticipated show is Stranger Things Season 5.
Outer Banks is about two groups of conflicting teenagers in search of a famous lost treasure. The main character, John B (Chase Stokes) clashes with Ward and Rafe Cameron to get to the treasure first.
“There’s always a lot of fast-paced action, and the main characters are teenagers so they’re relatable,” says freshman Annie Ewry.
Another popular show this season will be the fifth season of Stranger Things. The show, about a band of teenagers trying to defeat the evil realm of monsters called the Upside Down, is on its fourth season and the fifth will be released sometime in 2025.
“There are so many different ways things could play out,” says sophomore LIlah Carter. “There’s always something new.”
Sophomore Maddox Weddle says he also enjoys Stranger Things..
“It has long episodes, and the actors are funny,” Weddle said.
Another sophomore enjoys Stranger Things, too.
“It has a lot of action,” says sophomore Dakota Rennier.
People are also excited about the release of season 2 of a show called Arcane. Arcane is a 3D animated show based on the popular video game League of Legends, and it follows the story of two “Champion” characters. Vi and Jinx, from League of Legends.
The characters try to gain control over a form of arcane magic, all while in the middle of a war between two neighboring cities, Piltover and Zaun.
“My favorite show right now is Arcane,” says junior Jesus Dominguez. “The story is great, and it has a great music selection.”
Young Sheldon recently aired its last season, and students love it. Even students who didn’t submit a response for the form love Young Sheldon.
“It’s a funny show,” sophomore Chloe Oliver says.
Two popular shows this season are under the same genre: Anime. Anime is a form of animation that has become more popular with Americans these past few years, and it’s a cartoon produced in Japan. Death Note and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure are two popular Anime shows.
Death Note is about high schooler Light Yagami, who finds a mysterious notebook labeled the “Death Note.” He finds that when he writes the first and last name of a person in the book, they die. He uses it to get rid of bad people.
“Death Note has a great story line,” says freshman Alivia Northrup. “It’s very unique. You see the story through the perspective of the villain. It has a lot of great characters.”
The second popular Anime this season is JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. It’s about a bloodline of family members fighting an evil immortal vampire named Dio.
“Part 1 through 6 are life changing,” says sophomore Miles McKinney.
